Designed by Nigoğos Balyan in 1854, the mosque is one of the signature late-Ottoman buildings, decorated in Neo-Baroque detail.

The cobbled square in front of the mosque opens into streets famous for kumpir (loaded baked potato) and waffles, and on weekends transforms into a small open-air market with handmade jewellery, watercolours and second-hand books. From the terrace cafés on the waterfront the Asian shore's hills and passing ships fill the whole view.
